The Foundation for Science and Technology assigns unique identifiers for public funding.

The Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), through FCCN and within the scope of the program PTCRIS, desenvolveu uma iniciativa de registo e propagação de identificadores únicos (DOI – Digital Object Identifier) for national public funding.

Com o propósito de fomentar o reaproveitamento e interligação dos dados dos financiamentos atribuídos, esta ação insere-se no âmbito da infraestrutura Registo nacional que agrega informação de financiamento e projetos (SciPROJ), a base de dados nacional que agrega registos do financiamento nacional e internacional que sustenta as atividades de ciência e tecnologia desenvolvidas em Portugal.

Funding allocated by the FCT to R&D Projects, R&D Units, Scientific Employment and Advanced Training Grants will be covered.

Objectives

This project aims to assign unique, internationally recognized identifiers to funding managed by the FCT. This will allow for the unequivocal association of funding with the resulting scientific results, as well as with the researchers and institutions that implement that funding.

The aim is for funding DOIs to be widely known and used by funding beneficiaries, as well as efficiently integrated into the various science management systems.

All this to allow the potential of DOIs to be maximized and promoting transparency and open access to information about scientific activity in an agile and effective manner.

Phases of the initiative to date

Phase 0 took place during 2023 and was intended for the preparation of procedures. Following this, in Phase 1 – called the pilot project, from October to December 2023 – 6000 FCT funding registrations were selected. This selection was guided by the principle of ensuring the allocation of... DOI for financing with a start date equal to or later than 2019.

Phase 2 began in January 2024. After verifying the elements to be improved and creating the structure/rules for sustainability for the allocation of DOIs, the most recent financing (which is being contracted by the FCT) will be registered, as well as older financing, but with the potential to produce outputs where the integration of the unique financing identifier is possible.

Who is part of the initiative?

The project brings together the teams of PTCRIS and the Financing Information Systems Area (ASIF) of the FCCN unit, as well as the FCT departments responsible for the financing covered.
