What is it

Institutional Identity in the Scientific Ecosystem

ISNI+ combines the ISNI infrastructure with services from CCC – Ringgold Solutions to provide unique and persistent identifiers for research and development (R&D) institutions. These identifiers ensure data quality and consistency, facilitating the integration of information across different systems in the scientific ecosystem.

How it Works

Consistent Registration of Institutions

The ISNI+ system uses the Identify authority table, managed by CCC – Ringgold Solutions, an organization specializing in institutional identifiers that also acts as an ISNI registration agency. With over 600,000 records, this table is widely used in the scientific ecosystem. Each R&D institution in the ISNI+ system is associated with a Ringgold identifier and an ISNI, ensuring data accuracy and consistency.

Resources

Unique Identification of Institutions in the Scientific System

THE PTCRIS It provides resources to support the adoption and management of ISNI+ identifiers, ensuring the accuracy and interoperability of institutional data within the academic and scientific ecosystem.

  • Mapping of R&D institutions

For data migration processes, the PTCRIS It provides a data mapping service based on the open-source tool Organizational Entity Reconciliation and Metadata Normalization. (OpenRefine). This service allows you to find the identifiers associated with a given R&D institution, facilitating data integration between different systems.

  • Access to the database of R&D institutions

This service allows access to and downloads of the Identify database, managed by CCC – Ringgold Solutions. The Identify database is updated weekly with detailed information on Portuguese and foreign institutions, including ISNI+ codes and other relevant data. Data access is via FTP and can be used to access reliable, complete, and up-to-date data on institutions operating in the academic-scientific ecosystem.

  • Research and integration of data on R&D institutions.

Through an Application Programming Interface ( API ), this service allows searching for institutions operating in the academic-scientific ecosystem using the institution's name or alternative names, such as acronyms, former names, and language variants. This facilitates the integration of authoritative data about institutions into external systems, ensuring interoperability and consistency.

  • Organization Identifier Bridge

The Organization Identifier Bridge is a service provided by PTCRIS which allows you to obtain all persistent identifiers (PIDs) associated with a scientific or academic institution, from any unique identifier from that same organization.

    The goal is to ensure:

    • Disambiguation of organizations.
    • Interoperability between national and international systems.

    Supported Identifiers

Bridge unifies several identifier systems used in the academic and scientific ecosystem:

    Identifiers present in PTCRIS:

    • RINGGOLD
    • ISNI
    • Research Organization Registry (ROR)
    • OFR (discontinued)
    • FCT
    • DGEEC
    • Tax ID

Identifiers coming from the base ROR:

    • ROR
    • ISNI
    • OFR (discontinued)
    • GRID (discontinued)
    • WIKIDATA

    How does it work?

Bridge is made available through a API RESTful that uses consolidated data from the Ringgold and databases. ROR, Updated weekly.

    Endpoints

    • Production: https://api.ptcris.pt/services/resolve
    • Tests: https://etl.ptcris.pt/services/resolve

    parameters of API

    • type — Identifier typology (e.g.: ROR, ISNI, RINGGOLD)
    • id — Identifier value

The response returns all equivalent identifiers from the same organization (e.g., ROR, GRID, ISNI, Ringgold, etc.).

    Access to the Service

THE API It is public and free for entities within the ecosystem. PTCRIS. Access is via Basic Authentication, with credentials requested by email to ptcris@fccn.pt.
