What is it

Indicators of the national academic-scientific ecosystem

Science in Numbers is a service that provides indicators on national scientific funding and production, as well as the evolution of Open Access in Portugal. This service consolidates data from various information systems, enabling a detailed and holistic analysis of research activity.

The Academic-Scientific Ecosystem Indicators service is currently under development.

How it Works

Monitoring science and technology in Portugal

Science in Numbers is based on a Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence system that extracts, consolidates, and analyzes large volumes of data. This data generates indicators, which are made available through intuitive dashboards focused on three themes:

Financing

Scientific production

Assessment of scientific results published in the national S&T ecosystem, including the technical implementation of FCT funding and researcher productivity.

Monitoring the evolution of open access

Analysis of publication trends of national scientific production in open access, focusing on compliance with FCT policies, transformative agreements and publication costs (APCs).

Who is it for?

Target Audiences

Researchers

Access indicators on funding and scientific production to identify trends and support strategic decisions.

Institutions

Evaluate and monitor your institution's scientific performance while promoting transparency.

General Public

Access clear information about investment and results in S&T, increasing understanding and confidence in the system.

Frequently Asked Questions

The system is based on a data warehouse that aggregates information from various sources and uses the Power BI analytical tool to generate three distinct dashboards of indicators on funding, scientific production, and monitoring of the evolution of open access.

Key data sources include:

a) Registo nacional de financiamento de C&T (SciPROJ) – dados sobre financiamento atribuído à atividade científica em Portugal;

b) OpenAlex – primary source of bibliographic metadata at the publication level;

c) FCT-SIG – data on scientific output resulting from projects funded by the FCT.

The service contributes to transparency in the S&T ecosystem by providing clear information to the public about scientific investments and results, promoting a broader and more informed understanding of science in Portugal.
